Steps to a Successful Transition to College
Presented by: Fran Manocchio

This presentation focuses on the significant differences between receiving accommodations in high school and college.  Topics include: legal matters, student self-identification and self-advocacy, parent/guardian role in higher education, how to seek services and supports, and 5 truths and myths about the transition from high school to college. 

  • Participate will identify the difference in legal obligations in determining accommodations in K-12 and in post-secondary education. 
  • Participants will identify 3 skills a disabled student needs prior to attending college. 
  • Participants will identify 3 difference in the role of parents/guardians in the high school and post-secondary education settings.

About The Presenter:
Fran Manocchio is serving in her twelfth academic year as Assistant Dean and Director of Student Accessibility Services at Worcester State University. She has extensive experience in determining accommodations, reviewing documentation, and supporting disabled students and their parents/guardians.  The transition from high school to college is significant for all students; disabled students often face additional barriers.  

Fran earned her MA, CAGS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Assumption University.  Prior to joining Worcester State University, Fran held the position of Director of Human Rights and Disabilities for the City of Worcester.  She brings more than forty years of experience in human services with a unique perspective, honoring the strengths of each individual and advocating fiercely for access and equity.
